The Bomb Fashion Exhibit 2025: Shop L. VINE Will Present Rich Colorful Looks on the Runway

The classic television sitcom, ‘A Different World’ left a lasting impression on many for it’s rich diversity and representation of HBCU’s across the U.S. But what made the multicultural Hillman College campus remain out the most was it’s revolutionary style that the main cast embodied so well.

Costume designer, Ceci, who is currently working behind Netflix series ‘Dear Alabaster People,’  jumpstarted her styling career with five seasons of fashion with ‘A Different World.’ According to Fashionista she said, “If I didn’t get to function on another show, I’d be able to say ‘Wow, peek I left a little bit of a legacy or a body of work that people are still looking at.'”

The show’s costumes fully embraced the ’80s and ’90s fashion era through each characters persona and retain individual style. To this afternoon, we’re still in love with some of these fashion trends: from mom jeans and crop tops to embellished jean jackets and high-neck tops, we’re obsessing over eve

If you’re not familiar with the hit sitcom and spin-off of The Cosby Show, A Other World then what rock hold you been hiding under?

A other world followed Bill Cosby’s daughter Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) as she ventured off to a historically black college…Hillman College. This show focused on her and the lives of many other students. This show aired way before I was born, but I always find myself relating to many of the women. I related mostly to their sense of fashion.

To be completely honest A Different World is one of the reasons why I started getting into Vintage clothing. This show has been a huge inspiration for my current wardrobe.

Unfortunately they took A Different World off of Netflix . (I hope they take it back), but you can still catch a few episodes here and there on TV One. If you’re able to, please do me a favor mute the TV and just look at what they were wearing for a full episode. You’ll be amazed by what you see and get a true glance of 80’s and 90’s fashion.

I decided to question myself and see how good I could recreate and update the looks of 5 of my absolute favorite characters. I challenged myself more, by w

No other show explored the experience of coeds from a historically black college as thoroughly as NBC’s A Different World. The show’s colorful characters gave us everything we didn’t know we needed, from a young ebony man who made solving for x extremely sexy to a free-spirited redhead who would certainly be on the frontlines of any and every Black Lives Matter protest today.

But if “bad and boujee” was trademarked last year by Migos, it originated on the fictional Hillman College campus and was created by the grande dame of the dorm known as Gilbert Hall: Whitley Marion Gilbert. The Louis Vuitton luggage-toting, siditty Southern belle, as portrayed by Jasmine Guy, had a legacy at the prestigious university that went support generations. At 5-foot-2, her frame was petite, but her design was colossal. The Whitley personality not only reflected the most fashionable trends of the ’80s and ’90s, but she also influences contemporary style and serves as an inspiration for many young black women and ebony creatives today.

As one of the first examples of young, dark affluence on television, Whitley paved the way for a drawn-out list of pivotal TV personalities. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s Hilar

A Different World, 31 Years Later, Still Has Something to Say

There was a viral clip going around in June, an outtake from A Different World. In it, the actress Jasmine Guy, as Whitley Gilbert, dances before a mirror, fawning over photographs of Denzel Washington. She swishes, she sways—not so much the practiced seduction of a Southern belle, but more so, in the movements Guy gives, a pure bodily response to the very idea of a man like Denzel, all that sex and promise and intelligence and force and fierceness.

In the viral clip, the show’s producer and director, Debbie Allen, had arranged to have Denzel stand beside Guy as she acted. The audience, in that goofy way of live studio audiences of another era, goes wild when he appears, but Guy, ever a professional, is focused on her performance. Then she turns, sees him, puts her hand to her chest, and falls back, astounded, bathed in cheers and laughter.

When writing about the allure of A Different World, this unstaged and unaired clip—more than any of the episodes I watched, cast photos I looked at, or listicles of outfits—captured why the show felt special. Or maybe this is just my chance to sing the praises of Guy, with
