Five ways to name your fantasy world (and why it’s important)

Coming up with a name for your fantasy world can be a tall order. Some writers absolutely hate coming up with names for places, while others live for it. I’m going to be honest, I definitely fell in the former camp when I first started writing.

That’s back when I didn’t understand the purpose behind naming made-up worlds and locations. Back when I thought it was “just a name.” And if you’re coming into this thinking that same way, no judgment here, friend. I’ll make a convert out of you, yet.

The origins and history behind fantasy names

Think names like Gandalf, Jon Snow, and Ged. Where did they come from, and how did their creators come up with them?

The truth is that fantasy names are like fantasy itself: they can come from anywhere you like, whether it's a real-world language, a myth, or a naming convention that you invented yourself. Elvish in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth, for example, is heavily inspired by Finnish and Welsh, while the names in George R.R. Martin's Westeros move echoes of Old Norse. Other authors draw from Latin to name their fantasy characters.

What's most important about fantasy names in literature is that they are consistent, depending on the character's culture, lineage, or role in the story. Some naming patterns have also become familiar to us today: take a specify that ends “-iel,” for instance. It often suggests angelic origins (as in “Daniel” or “Azriel”), while names with harsh consonants can signal danger or power. Such etymology can — and should — unveil deeper, thoughtful worldbuilding choices.

What are the benefits of using a fantasy call generator?

One of the primary advantages of using a fantasy call generator is the efficiency and speed with which it can produce a diverse array of names. Rather than spending hours brainstorming and agonizing over the perfect name, writers and creators can simply input their desired parameters and let the generator do the heavy lifting. This can be a huge time-saver, especially when working on large-scale projects with numerous characters and locations.

Fantasy name generators can also be a wellspring of inspiration for writers and game creators. Sometimes, all it takes is a single generated name to spark an idea for a character's backstory or a plot twist. By presenting us with names we might not
