The World According to Garp

Garp?

Garp.

Garp.

Garp?

Yes, Garp.

Sounds like a fish:

"My daughter got knocked up by a Garp! "

Find out if that's

the son of a b*tch's first or last name.

- Was that his first name or last name?

- It was Garp.

Just Garp. That's the whole thing.

I think it was his last name.

- What was his first name?

- I neverfound out.

She neverfound out his first name?

- Jenny, you must know his first name.

- TechnicalSergeant Garp.

I knew it! A goddamn soldier.

Technical Sergeant?

T.S. Yes. T.S. Garp.

That's my baby's name.

If I ever meet the son of a b*tch,

I'll kill him.

He's dead already.

I don't suppose

you bothered to get married.

Married?

She never even met the son of a b*tch.

I didn't want to marry. I wanted a baby.

But a wedding ring, dear...

I didn't need his ring, Mother.

I needed his sperm.

Don't you dare say "sperm" in this house.

- Where are you going?

- To get a job.

I'm a trained nurse

and I plan to continue my work.

Jenny!

In the war...

...which side was he on?

Was he on our side at least?

He wasn't on any side.

He was flat on his back in a hospital.

One night,

when he had one of his usual erections..

Fundamentally Me

Synopsis:

A struggling writer, T.S. Garp (Robin Williams, Dead Poets Society), tries to find his retain sense of identity while dealing with his mother’s (Glenn Shut, Dangerous Liaisons) overpowering personality, who unexpectedly becomes a feminist icon.

Reaction & Thoughts:

“It can be a real adventure having a life.”

Based on John Irving’s book of the same name, The Earth According to Garp is the story of man’s journey from birth to adulthood. I felt as though I was the proverbial fly-on-the-wall as I observed this person’s eventful life. The downside to this technique is that I merely felt appreciate a spectator, thus I never developed an emotional connection with the title character. That said, this is a hugely entertaining comedy-drama.

It was directed by George Roy Hill, who gave us Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and the cult sports movie Slap Shot (1977). All three movies use irreverent humor to explore serious issues. The World According to Garpaims much higher than the other two movies, though. This picaresque tale attempts to examine all aspects of the human experience: the good, the bad, and ev

The Cider House Rules

(n.p.), Garp Enterprises/Radio-Telegraphic Company, 1991. A very early draft of the screenplay that won Irving an Academy Award for best adapted screenplay, based on his sixth novel. Signed by Irving. This is the earliest copy of the script we have seen: the film was released in 1999; this version is dated "June 14, 1991, Revised." Hand-numbered "42." There are substantial textual differences between this early version and the final version. 130 pages, stringbound, with one remaining brad. Foxing to pages; near nice. An award-winning script, seen here as a work in progress. [#029480]$3,500

(London), Bloomsbury, (1996). The uncorrected proof clone of the first British edition of this title, which was incorporated into the U.S. edition of Trying to Save Piggy Sneedand had no separate U.S. printing. Inscribed by Irving. An uncommon proof (the British trade edition would have had a proportionally smaller printing than a U.S. one would have had, and the proof equally so), especially wi
