Huerfano Journal Announces Purchase of Huerfano County WorldBack to News

WALSENBURG, CO, March 8, 2010 – Brian and Gretchen Orr, owners of the weekly Huerfano Journal, have purchased the Huerfano County World from Dale Bean. The Orrs have combined the two weekly newspapers into one, calling it the Huerfano Society Journal. The transaction was finalized on February 25. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Dirks, Van Essen & Murray, a newspaper merger-and-acquisition firm in Santa Fe, New Mexico, represented the Orr family in the transaction.

The Huerfano World, originally launched as the Walsenburg World in 1889, has undergone many mention tweaks over the past century and a quarter, and putting the World and Journal together is a natural combination. The combined paper will have a weekly circulation of 2,500 copies in Huerfano County.

“We’re confident we’ll continue to produce the finest and most complete news coverage for all of Huerfano County,” said owner and editor Gretchen Orr. “We have 22 writers scattered from Gardner to La Veta to Walsenburg, covering topics they each feel passionately about.”

Court: Huerfano County District Court

Client: The World Journal

Application for Access Filed: June 22, 2023

Background: In January 2023, Mark Craddock, a reporter for The World Journal, filed a public records request seeking the recording of closed meeting of the Walsenburg City Council during which members allegedly discussed the city’s ailing water infrastructure and acrimony over whether to consult the former city water manager as a resource, in spite of hard feelings regarding his departure from the city.

The city denied Craddock’s request, claiming that the recording could not be publicly released “because executive session recordings are not subject to public inspection” under the Colorado Open Meetings Law. City officials used the same reasoning to deny Craddock’s later request for an attachment to an email sent by the former mayor, Charles Bryant, that also concerned the water infrastructure issue.

On behalf of The World Journal, Rachael Johnson, the Reporters Committee’s Local Legal Initiative attorney for Colorado, filed a lawsuit asking the Huerfano County District Court to order the Walsenburg City Council to disclose the req

As tariffs take effect, a recent struggle for small town newspapers arises – the cost of paper

The co-publisher of the Society Journal in Walsenburg admits it’s a “grandiose name for a very little paper.”

Still, the “world” for Brian Orr’s team of three staff reporters and a handful of freelancers spans more than 10,000 square miles. It consists of the contiguous Huerfano and Las Animas Counties as well as New Mexico’s Colfax County. This sparsely populated terrain is rugged, with gaps in reliable internet coverage.

“(My) readership is older. Older readers fancy paper products. I do too,” he said.

In an editorial in late February, Orr told his readers the cost of printing the World Journal’s physical newspaper may soon rise dramatically.

The reason: proposed 25 percent tariffs on lumber products from Canada, including newsprint paper. According to Columbia Journalism Review, Canada provides an estimated 80 percent of the newsprint used by U.S. newspapers. The Trump policy represents an economic shock for small newspapers, in particular, companies often already working on thin margins.

“Just devastating to have to pay that much more in printing,” Orr said.
