Naked hiking day is the date when clothes come off and body parts breath freely. Thru-hikers, weekend backpackers and day hikers annually unite across the globe for one day to shamelessly hit the trails in their birthday suits.
Thru-hikers on the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Route are the largest participants. Most are on remote trails, away from heavily trafficked areas and can bare all without much peril of offending anyone or terrifying any small children.
It is meant to be fun and nothing more. The day has gradually evolved into somewhat of a summertime ritual and a right of passage for all thru-hikers to partake. It is not for the shy... nor for those that sunburn easily.

It is held on Summer Solstice, which is June 21st. Also known as "midsummer", the day has been a part of folklore and fairy tales for centuries as a day believed to keep special powers.

World Naked Hiking Day 2024
Wilson River Trail Footbridge trailhead is the site for the 2024 Wandering Bare Nudist Group's World Naked Hiking Day clothing-optional hike. Find this 9.7-mile out-and-back trail neighboring Tillamook, Oregon. Generally considered a moderately challenging trail, it takes about 4 hours and 20 minutes to complete. The route travels west over a log bridge and up to a rock bluff with excellent views of the river below. The route drops down to the creek. A log bench applications a relaxing place to delight in the majestic view of mossy boulders and lush ferns absorbing the trickling water. Several majestic waterfalls spill down the rugged hillsides after Wolf Creek. The trail ascends quickly and then becomes a more gradual go up. Along the way, small western hemlock trees dot the forest floor along with massive nurse logs that provide wildlife habitat and create niches for plants to grow. After reaching a vista-filled ridgeline, the trail crosses the first of many streams that mark the beginning of the Ryan Creek watershed. The gently rolling trail is carved from steep hillsides and crosses beautiful cascading waterfalls.

Naked hiking isn’t for everyone. But hitting the trail in the nude provides a handful of brave hikers the opportunity to connect to the outdoors in a distinct way. Head out on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) or the Appalachian Trail (AT) on or around Naked Hiking Time (this year’s celebration happened on the solstice, June 21) and you’re likely to run into some fellow backpackers, er, celebrating.
While Naked Hiking Day may be a new celebration, summer solstice festivals, on which Naked Hiking Day is based, are anything but. Neolithic humans used the summer solstice as an agricultural marker, and on Greek calendars, the holiday represented the start to a new year. Many modern pagans believe that magic was particularly strong during this celebration, and they construct bonfires to further strengthen the sun’s energy.

There are a million ways to celebrate the official first day of summer. Friends gather for cookouts or camp out to enjoy the plentiful sunshine. Personally, I’ll be catching the latest sunset of the year from a board on a group paddle this year. But when it comes to welcoming in the sunniest season, there are few traditions as bold as Hike Naked Day.
Hike Naked Day is exactly what it sounds like, a day for stripping down to your birthday suit and taking a stroll on a trail. While its origins aren’t clear, we appear to have thru-hikers to thank for it, with most sources claiming it arose naturally on the Pacific Crest Trail and Appalachian Trail. However it started, hundreds of people now celebrate it— usually discreetly. You won’t be getting this holiday off from work anytime soon.
