AP World History seems like it would be a pretty difficult class. There's so much to cover—I mean, there’s nearly 1,000 years of global human history! But how much do you really need to know? And how do people usually execute on the AP test?

What Factors Determine the Difficulty of an AP Class?

Before we attempt to answer the big scrutinize, "Is AP World History hard?" let's go over the factors that determine how challenging a particular AP class is. We've grouped these five factors into three categories.

Testing Statistics

This section deals with hard data about students' performance on the AP exam.

Factor 1: Pass Rate

The pass rate is the percentage of students who earn 3s or higher on a particular AP exam. A low pass rate taken at face value indicates a harder test; however, sometimes classes that are more popular acquire artificially low pass rates because there's a higher proportion of under-prepared students in the testing pool. Therefore, it's important to consider an AP test's transfer rate in c

AP World History: To take it or not?

While some students think AP classes may be too challenging to take, others, specifically sophomores in AP World History, see it as an opportunity to get college credit for their future.

The workload of the class, in general, may be hefty, but it has the potential to be worth it in the end.

“The amount of homework I have in AP World is about two hours each weekend,” Sophomore Owen Hess said.

Hess, along with many others, spends his time on the weekends to get the weekly reading guides done.

However, students can be different in the way they do their homework; splitting it up throughout the week or doing it the night before.

“On average I spend about 30 minutes a night, depending on what I have to do,” Sophomore Anna Martin said.

Martin is more distributive on her weekly reading assignments, in AP World History, so it is less of a load and stressful to do the night before.

Other than the homework, the class from a broad perspective can be a challenge for these sophomores.

“I think the hardest part is that it is the first AP course for most sophomores here, so they have to get used to the rigor and pace of the course,” AP World

Should I take AP World History?

Answered

Hi!

I'm in AP World History right now and, even though history is one of my worst subjects, the class isn't extremely hard to manage, it just gets hard about two weeks before unit tests when you have to study. In APWH you learn completely independently. Each week, you'll have to examine around 20 textbook pages and memorize continuities, comparisons, discontinuities, etc., not specific dates or people. In class, you will enforce your knowledge and gain critical thinking skills. (at least this is how my school does it)

Even so, this really varies depending on your school. If students in your school explain you to stay away from the class, it might be good to consider. If it is the teacher, then this could influence the class exposure dramatically. However, maybe many students simply don't like putting in the work. I would, if you haven't already, ask sophomores exactly why the class is so difficult. If it is because of the teacher or something else really important, I would take the on-level society history class and try to fit in another AP that aligns with your interests. If you could tell me what subjects you en

How Difficult is WHAP? 🧠

Good question... 🤔

The simple, but unhelpful answer, is that it depends. This is because history classes like WHAP have vastly unlike styles depending on your instructor. So, a good way to figure out if WHAP will be hard is to demand some people who have taken WHAP at your school. Be sure not to ask what kinds of work the class required.

Some teachers emphasize learning how to write the essays for the exam, which requires a lot of writing work, whereas others focus more purely on the historical content, which leans toward doing tons of reading and responses/comprehension questions 📝
