‘It’s a National Tragedy’: What an Outbreak at One World Beef Reveals About the Fed’s Failed COVID Response

(The following article was published online Nov. 24 by The Counter, a nonprofit, independent, nonpartisan newsroom investigating the forces shaping how and what America eats. It’s being republished by permission.)

In April, as the first wave of Covid-19 infections began to spread across the U.S., the nation’s largest hotspot wasn’t in New York City. It wasn’t in Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, or any major urban center. It was in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a small town of about 190,000.

Specifically, it was in the Smithfield Foods pork plant on the north side of town, nestled into a bend in the Big Sioux River. By April 16, 644 cases had been traced back to the plant—44 percent of all the cases in South Dakota at the time—pushing Sioux Falls to the top of the New York Times’ list of single-source hotspots. Brawley’s One World Beef Fined $23K by State for COVID Matters

BRAWLEY — In late December, the state Department of Industrial Relations’ Division of Occupational Safety and Health, or Cal/OSHA, announced it had fined One World Beef Packers in Brawley some $23,000 in connection to the COVID-19-related death of one of its employees during an outbreak in late May, according to a press release.

In June, Cal/OSHA became aware that several One Society Beef Packers employees were hospitalized for complications related to COVID-19, including one employee who died. When Cal/OSHA inspected the Brawley facility at 57 Shank Route, investigators noted that workers in the production lines and quality assurance area were not provided protective barriers and were productive too close to each other, a Dec. 23 press emit stated.

Further, the employer failed to report the serious illnesses and fatality within the eight-hour occasion limit as required by law. As a result, Cal/OSHA cited One World Beef Packers a total of $23,000 on Dec. 11 for one serious violation and a regulatory violation for failing to report the serious illnesses.
